How to Use Sage Smudge Sticks

  1. Prepare your space
Open a window or door to allow the smoke (and negative energy) to leave the room.

  2. Light the smudge stick
Hold the end of your smudge stick at a 45° angle and light it with a match or candle. Let it burn for about 20–30 seconds, then gently blow out the flame so it smoulders and releases smoke.

  3. Cleanse yourself first
Waft the smoke lightly around yourself, starting at your heart and moving up and over your head, then down along your body.

  4. Cleanse your space
Walk slowly around the room, gently waving the stick or using a feather to direct the smoke into corners, doorways, and around objects. Focus on areas that feel heavy or stagnant.

  5. Set your intention
As you move, you may wish to silently (or aloud) state your intention — for example: “I release what no longer serves me and invite peace and clarity.”

  6. Extinguish safely
When finished, press the burning end of the smudge stick firmly into a fireproof dish, sand, or earth until fully out. Do not leave it unattended while burning.
